Benefits of the Diploma Programme

The Diploma Programme prepares students for effective participation in a rapidly evolving and increasingly global society as they:

  • develop physically, intellectually, emotionally and ethically
  • acquire breadth and depth of knowledge and understanding, studying courses from 6 subject groups
  • develop the skills and a positive attitude toward learning that will prepare them for higher education
  • study at least two languages and increase understanding of cultures, including their own
  • make connections across traditional academic disciplines and explore the nature of knowledge through the programme’s unique theory of knowledge course
  • undertake in-depth research into an area of interest through the lens of one or more academic disciplines in the extended essay
  • enhance their personal and interpersonal development through creativity, action and service

Choosing an IB education

A Higher Level of Recognition

Universities in 102 countries welcome IB diplomas as well as individual courses for admission, placement, and credit purposes. Individual IB courses are recognized as signifying a student's rigorous preparation in an academic discipline; the IB diploma signifies such preparation in all six academic disciplines, service to community, and development of an international perspectives.

 

Fair and Balanced Assessment Using International Standards

IB assessment is of many types, occurs several times over the usual two-year duration of IB courses, and includes the classroom teacher as a partner. IB students' work is assessed by several examiners whose assessments are carefully moderated by an international examining board. IB teachers receive detailed formal feedback on every aspect of their students' IB assessment each year.

 

A Remarkable Degree of Flexibility

IB curricula and examinations are available in IBO's three official languages of English, Spanish, and French. The IB Diploma offers schools a wide varity of courses, teachers a wide choice of topics, and students a wide variety of assessments and areas of specialization.

 

Commitment to Authorized Schools

Schools must undergo an exhaustive application process for authorization to offer our courses. Once authorized, schools are required to participate in IB professional development on a regular basis and to be reviewed every five years by the appropriate regional IBO office.

INTERNATIONAL BACCALAUREATE RESEARCH STUDY REVEALS POSITIVE ASSOCIATION BETWEEN IB AND COLLEGE PERFORMANCE IN FLORIDA

 

59% of IB students who scored a 6 or 7 in an IB exam earned an A in their first college course at the University of Florida Bethesda, MD, IB, April 28, 2011 -- The International Baccalaureate (IB), in conjunction with SRI International, released key findings today on the college 

preparedness of 4,845 IB students who attended the University of Florida from 2000-2005. The study reveals a positive association between students’ IB subject exam performance and students’ first college course grades with 59% of those IB students who scored a 6 or 7 on their IB exams receiving an A in their first college courses in the same subject. Of those students who sat for Higher Level IB exams and scored a 6 or 7, 71% earned As in the corresponding college subject.

 

The analysis focused on seven subjects: physics, chemistry, biology, mathematics, English, Spanish, and French. The percentage of As earned by students who scored a 6 or 7 was highest for English courses (72%), followed by Sciences and French courses (65% and 66% respectively), Spanish courses (59%) and mathematics courses (53%).  

 

“The University of Florida provides empirical evidence on what we have known all along – that the IB curriculum is great preparation for, and an indicator of, college success”, said Drew Deutsch, Director of IB Americas. “Florida’s efforts to expand access to an IB education to more of their students are showing a positive effect at the university level.” 

 

Founded in 1968, with 3,235 schools in 141 countries, the IB develops and offers three challenging programmes to over 923,000 students aged 3 to 19 years. The IB encourages students to be active learners, well-rounded individuals and engaged world citizens. It also serves in an educational advisory capacity to other educational organizations.
